The Delhi Police has clarified that the said NSA order is a routine extension, denying reports that the move was taken to suppress the CJP protests.
In a routine revamp, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi earlier this month allowed the Police Commissioner to exercise powers of detention authority under the National Security Act, 1980, for a period of three months, from July 19 to October 18, 2026.
This authorization authorizes the Delhi Police Commissioner to issue preventive detention orders under the provisions of the NSA within the specified period. The order will remain in effect until October 18, unless amended or withdrawn earlier.
The Delhi Police clarified that the said order is a routine extension/renewal of powers under the NSA, which is issued every three months, rejecting reports from several media outlets that the move has been taken in order to suppress the CJP protests.
The current renewal was issued on 07.07.2026 for the period from 19.07.2026 to 18.10.2026, much before the swelling protests of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began.
“Several media outlets reported that in order to suppress CJP protests, the Delhi Police Commissioner has been given powers of detention under the National Security Act,” Delhi Police said on Thursday.
It has also been clarified that no specific request has been made in the current context, Delhi Police said, adding that renewal is a routine administrative practice and has been interpreted out of context by some media reports.

The protest intensified last weekend when Sonam Wangchuk was allegedly “forcibly” transferred to Safdarjung Hospital amid her deteriorating health condition.
