NEW DELHI: The next big wave of reforms will have to come from the states if India wants to become a developed nation by 2047, as most of the heavy lifting has been done at the Centre, Niti Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said on Saturday.“Most of the work in India now is at the state level. The government of India has probably done 90% of what it needed to do,” Subrahmanyam said at an event organized by the All India Management Association. He said: “Land is a state, work is a state, electricity is a state, water supplies are a state, and roads are a state.”“Differences in governance at the country level now determine growth outcomes,” Subrahmanyam added. “Countries that drive reforms are moving forward, while others risk being left behind.”He said India’s demographics give it a great opportunity. “India is going through good times…demography is behind us, our capabilities are behind us, there is wind in our sails,” he added, but said becoming a developed country would require high and sustainable growth. At the event, Vianai Systems founder Vishal Sikka said India should build its own AI stack and not rely on systems it does not understand or control.
