Addressing the 57th establishment day of the Central Industrial Security Force here, Shah said the force is already protecting 361 vital installations, including 71 airports, the Parliament complex and the Statue of Unity near Kevadiya in Gujarat.

“The CISF undertakes a variety of tasks. You are securing the grand Sardar Patel memorial, you are protecting our Parliament complex, the largest panchayat in our democracy, and elsewhere you are securing important dams and railway installations,” Shah said.

The Home Secretary also detailed the strategic shift towards sea and air defence, saying that, alongside these established roles, the government had worked to embed port security for the Port Security and Security Forces.

Shah announced that the CISF has been appointed as the nodal agency for drone security and said that the Home Ministry has decided to create a new sector for this purpose.

Highlighting the growing footprint of the force over the past year, Shah listed several new sites approved for CISF protection, including Kartaviya Bhavan, Siva Tirth, Noida International Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport, and several vital energy and mining projects such as the Talipalli coal mine project in Chhattisgarh.

“After CISF takes over port security, our maritime safety will improve in parallel with the country’s economic growth,” Shah said.

The announcement comes in the wake of a decision by the Center to designate CISF as a security organization recognized under international law for security of ships and port facilities, making it the new safety regulator for around 250 facilities along India’s maritime borders.

This role was previously managed by the Indian Register of Shipping, but the government identified the need for a professional paramilitary agency to handle core tasks such as anti-terrorism and anti-subversion operations at all export and import ports.
