New Bihar Chief Minister announced live: Nitish Kumar is likely to resign from his post as Bihar Chief Minister in Patna after chairing the latest cabinet meeting today. The new CM will be announced today after the NDA meeting at 4pm.

Bihar BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi that IHe said that a meeting of the BJP legislature will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday at the party office to elect its leader, in the presence of former MP Chief Minister and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as central observer.

This will be followed by the NDA meeting at 4 pm in the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, where the final touches will be given to the party’s legislative leader.

Citing sources, ANI reported that Nitish may step down after the cabinet meeting. If this happens, Bihar could have a new chief minister on April 15.

Nitish took oath as Rajya Sabha MP

Nitish Kumar is heading to Delhi after serving as CM of Bihar for two decades. He was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 11. He had earlier resigned from the MLC post in Bihar Assembly on March 30, 2026.

Nitish was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, and as per the rule, an elected member has to resign from the MLC post within 14 days of being elected to the upper house of Parliament.

Who will be the next chief minister of Bihar?

The BJP is yet to announce its selection. However, Samrat Chaudhary is seen as the favourite, while Nityanand Rai and Renu Devi are also in the discussions.

The final decision is expected after the BJP legislature meeting.

The 243-member Bihar Assembly allows for a government of up to 36 ministers. Reports indicate that most of the current ministers may be retained, with only minor changes likely.

Nitish will remain a key figure in Bihar

Sanjay Kumar Jha, who is the working president of the JDU and also a Rajya Sabha MP, said Nitish Kumar would remain committed to the development of Bihar, even if he was not the president.

Jha said the party fought the 2025-30 term under the leadership of Nitish Kumar with the support of the NDA, and the new government will continue its policies.

“As far as Bihar is concerned, we contested the electoral mandate for 2025-30 under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and with the support of the NDA. The Prime Minister has been campaigning regularly and the new government will continue Nitish Ji’s policies and work under his supervision. Even if he is not the Prime Minister, his focus remains on Bihar, and he travels to Delhi only to attend Parliament sessions,” he said.
