Talks about a merger between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are baseless, people familiar with the matter told HT, stressing that there is no proposal under consideration to merge the two parties.

However, the sources indicated that the two sides kept the door open to a possible alliance and remained in contact on issues of common political interest.

Rahul Gandhi and Abhishek Banerjee also discussed ways to enhance coordination between their parties. It is learned that the two leaders agreed to hold the next round of discussions in Hyderabad.
