The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking a stay of the proposed caste census, while also expressing strong disapproval at the language used by the petitioner in the public interest litigation (PIL).

During the hearing, the bench strongly objected to the language used in the PIL. Chief Justice Surya Kant, who was presiding over the case, directly addressed the petitioner, who appeared in person, news agency PTI reported.

“”Aapne apne petition me badtameezi ki bhasha likhi hai. Aapne kisse apna petition likhwaya hai’ (You have written inappropriate language in your petition. Who wrote your petition?) The chief justice said.
He further added,‘Aap kahan se aisi bhasha likhte ho petition me (Where do you write this language in your petition),” while questioning the wording of the petition.
The bench also included Justices Joymalia Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi.
An appeal sought to stop the caste census
The petition urged the Center to stop the practice of caste census. It also requested directions to the government to develop policies that would provide economic incentives to families with one child.

However, the court found no basis for this petition and rejected it.
This is not the first time this case has been brought to court. On February 2, the Supreme Court refused to consider another political isolation law. This petition has raised concerns about the process of recording, classifying and verifying caste data in the upcoming census.
The 2027 Census, the country’s 16th national census, will be the first since 1931 to include detailed caste data and will be conducted entirely in digital format.
