An Odisha man has been arrested for cheating a job seeker of INR 21 lakh on the promise of a railway job.

The accused, identified as Gadadhar Nath from Ulatpur in Cuttack district, was arrested from Aska district on Thursday, police said.

The complainant transferred the entire amount through online transactions during 2024-25, Aska Divisional Police Officer S R Pradhan said.

To gain the trust of the complainant, the accused allegedly submitted a job offer letter and joining letter purportedly issued by Eastern Railway, Kolkata.

However, when the complainant’s son went to Kolkata to join the job, the documents turned out to be fake, police said.

“The letter did not include any name or address and it turned out to be fake,” Pradhan said.

After learning of the fraud, the complainant confronted the accused and demanded that he return his money. The accused allegedly assured him that the amount would be refunded within six months.

When the money was not returned, the complainant visited the accused’s house and asked for the money back. The police said that the accused abused him and chased him with a sword.

A complaint was later lodged with Dhosoori police station. During the settlement reached on May 12, the defendant agreed to return the money within four months and pay it immediately $3 lakh, police said.

However, when the accused failed to honor the agreement and allegedly abused the complainant again, an FIR was lodged with the Aska Police Station, which led to his arrest.

Aska IIC SK Sahu said the police are investigating whether the accused cheated any other job seekers.
