Police guard a private residence in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, although no one is home. The residents quietly left a few days ago, citing concern for their safety while the nation awaits the return of their son. Abhijit Debaki, a 30-year-old Boston resident, caught the attention of Delhi’s political system after he issued a clarion call to “meet me at the airport” on June 6.

As founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Debke’s mission is to address systemic failings in the education system, starting with a peaceful protest from the airport to Jantar Mantar in the capital.

But back home, his family is worried.

“Being a father, my concerns are clear,” said Abhijeet’s father, Bhagwanrao Debki. “Initially, I tried to convince him to reconsider launching any campaign. However, once a person decides to do something, there is little left for him to say. At this stage, we do not intend to advise him further,” said Deepki, who retired last year as an engineer with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The Dipkes have temporarily moved from their home in MIDC Waluj area of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, erstwhile Aurangabad, to an undisclosed location. However, Bhagwanrao Debki told HT over phone on Wednesday that the family has not received any threats. Although they are naturally concerned as parents, “Abhijeet has a sound understanding of the law and assured us that he will not violate any legal provisions,” he said.

But Abhijeet Deepaki is preparing for arrest. Lawyer and human rights activist Asim Saroudi said Debaki spoke to him on the phone on Wednesday seeking support for his protest.

“Abhijit Deepki told me that he is ready for the arrest. He is of the opinion that the problem is not limited to the 30,000 students, who appeared for the NEET exams. It also concerns their parents, which takes the number of affected people to 70-80 lakh,” Sarode said.

He said that Debaki invited famous individuals like teacher Sonam Wangchuk, actor Prakash Raj, social activist Vishambhar Chaudhary and senior journalist Nikhil Wagle to join his protest in New Delhi. “He does not plan to launch a political group and says he will lead his protest within the legal framework,” Sarudi said.
