An 18-year-old woman was strangled to death by her parents, who were opposed to her relationship with a young man in Shamli district, police said on Friday.

Ehsan and his wife Guvrana were arrested in connection with the death of their daughter Hina, who was found hanging from the ceiling of her home in Kandhla on July 1, police inspector NP Singh said.

Based on a complaint filed by her father, the police initially registered a case alleging that she was murdered by a youth.

However, during the investigation, police found the parental role suspicious.

During interrogation, Ahsan and Ghufraneh allegedly confessed to strangling Hina over her relationship with a young man, which they disputed, the SP said.

According to police, the couple later hung the body from the ceiling to make it look like a suicide.

The post-mortem examination did not confirm death by suicide, which strengthens suspicions of murder, Singh said, adding that further investigations were underway.
