A 17-year-old girl was brutally attacked in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district after she rejected a marriage proposal from a 22-year-old man who was stalking her, police said, adding that the prime suspect and his father have been arrested in connection with the case, while three others are still on the run.
The girl, who sustained deep injuries on her head and neck, was taken to a district hospital and later referred to Gwalior in a critical condition. Doctors said she needed 60 stitches, and is still undergoing intensive treatment in a serious condition.
The police identified the stalker as Dharmendra Parihar and his father as Ajab Singh Parihar.
Police officer Prashant Sharma said, “The accused had been harassing the girl for a long time and pressuring her for marriage. Dharmendra, angered by her rejection, entered her house on Friday when she was alone. He attacked her with an axe. The girl ran to the roof to save herself, but he used a scarf to hang her. When people saw this, he ran away, leaving a noose behind him.”
A video of the incident, which shows Dharmendra pinning the girl with a scarf while she was standing on the roof, went viral on social media on Saturday.
The police registered an FIR against five people, including Dharmendra, on charges of attempt to murder, grievous injury and trespassing.
The main suspect is now being interrogated.
