A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by Border Security forces at the Latiyapura border outpost in Tripura’s Unakoti district during an alleged smuggling attempt, police said on Saturday.

According to police, a Border Security Forces constable, who was patrolling the border fence area on Friday evening, saw some people throwing bags over the fence from Indian territory while people from the Bangladeshi side tried to collect them.
After the border guard forces intervened, people from the Bangladeshi side assaulted the policeman, wounding him in the hand with a sharp weapon. Other border guards rushed to the scene to rescue him. Upon seeing the situation, the Border Police officer fired two shots at them.
While people from both sides were able to flee the scene, a Bangladeshi citizen was injured in the left shoulder and died instantly. His body was taken to the regional hospital in Kalasahar for an autopsy, police said.
