A 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday morning for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl in Tripura’s Unakoti district, police said.

The accused allegedly took the minor to an abandoned house in the village and raped her while her parents were off work. The families gathered after hearing the girl’s screams, and subsequently informed her mother. Local residents also arrested him and handed him over to the police.
A police force arrived at the scene and arrested the accused. “A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act,” a police officer said, adding that the accused has been arrested.
The minor’s mother said that she had gone out to work when the accident occurred. The accused allegedly offered $600 for a minor. She added: “Local residents informed me about the incident. He (the accused) was arrested and brought to the police station. Now we want justice for our daughter.”
Meanwhile, a total of 667 cases related to crimes against women were registered and 426 people were arrested in connection with these cases last year in Tripura. Of the total crimes against women recorded last year, 168 cases were related to rape and 116 cases were related to sexual harassment.
During the investigation, the police discovered the involvement of 298 people in rape-related cases and arrested 182 of them. The same year recorded a total of 116 cases of harassment involving 186 people. The police arrested 58 people in connection with sexual harassment cases.
