Apple TV is booking a return flight to Widow’s Bay.
The streaming company has ordered a second season of the series, a horror-comedy starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a New England town in which everyone except him believes the town is cursed. The renewal comes six days before the show concludes its first season. The final is scheduled for June 17.
Apple TV has also signed up Widow’s Bay Creator Katie Diebold to a multi-year overall deal. She will continue to serve as showrunner for the series and will also develop new projects.
Widow’s Bay It received critical acclaim (and some famous fans) over the course of its first season. Diebold said Hollywood Reporter She’s had the show in her head for nearly 20 years — and almost sold a copy of it to Amazon in 2013 before pulling it again. “I had this bad feeling,” she said. “I put a pin in it. I knew it wasn’t ready. I knew I didn’t think enough about the show or the world.”
Produced by Apple Studios Widow’s Bay. Diebold writes and executive produces with Hiro Murai (who directed five of the season’s ten episodes), Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Chen, and Rhys. The cast also includes Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Romy Southwick, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kee Callan and Jeff Heller.
“From the moment audiences arrive at Widow’s Bay, they’re hooked on every wacky mystery, unexpected laughs and cursed secret created by Katie, Hiro, Matthew and the entire team,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV. “It’s become one of those shows that everyone is talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continuing to embrace it. We can’t wait to come back for another season.”
For her part, Diebold joked that season two will be “about how everything is fine on the island and there’s nothing to worry about.”
