It looks like Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube will be moving to 24 Jump Street.
However, yet Hollywood Reporter When I learned Wednesday that the trilogy was in development at Sony Pictures, I asked the question: What happened to 23 Jump Streetwas also the title of the last film in the action-comedy franchise 22 Jump Street?
THR Sony has requested more information about the reasoning behind the new installment’s title, but has not received any response as of press time. Until the answer is revealed (and frankly, it may not be until the film’s release), there are certainly some justifications for fans to speculate about.
First, the creative team may be committed to the meta nature of the franchise. Let me refresh your memory, as it has been more than a decade since the last part was released. At the beginning of the 2014 pic, Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) learn that the secret police base led by Captain Dixon (Ice Cube) has been moved across the street from the old Korean church at 21 Jump Street to the old Vietnamese church at the new address (part title, wink wink).
“I can’t believe the Koreans bought their church back,” Jenko says, and Schmidt adds, “Yes, I mean it’s nice that there was a bigger abandoned church right across the street.”
“Next year, maybe we’ll be across the street, next door,” Tatum’s character jokes. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Hale’s character adds. The camera then pans to the vacant lot with a large sign saying: “Coming Soon 23 Units on Jump Street.”
It’s safe to say that these housing units were most likely built in the last 12 years, so the only vacant building or church for the next secret operation’s headquarters was probably two doors away.
Another theory comes from a producer who worked on the 2012 and 2014 films, and is set to produce the new installment. Neal H. Moritz shared the title page for 24 Jump Street scenario on his Instagram account on Wednesday, which included a subtitle saying: “It took so long that we had to skip a scenario.”
Moritz wasn’t wrong, as 12 years is actually a long time between sequels, especially when the final one only took two years to produce.
Fans will just have to wait and see what our favorite duo of anarchic undercover cops will do on 24 Jump Street, and whether they’ll actually go to medical school or be recruited as foreign exchange students, according to the movie’s fake-out sequence at the end of the film. 22 Jump Street.
Rodney Rothman will direct the new film from a screenplay he wrote with Hill and Megan Malloy. A release date has not been announced yet.
