France’s latest trip to Victor Hugo territory has revealed its first teaser, and one thing immediately became clear: this Wretched He doesn’t break out into song.

The first shots of director Fred Cavaye’s new film adaptation swap soaring show tunes with prison cells, sword fights and revolutionary chaos. The teaser begins with a young Jean Valjean enduring his harsh years of imprisonment before fast-forwarding to his new life and the inevitable pursuit of Inspector Javert, played by Tahar Rahim. Vincent Lyndon plays the older Valjean. Fans can expect ballads in the style of Anne Hathaway or Hugh Jackman singing “Who Am I?” You may be disappointed. Everyone else can relax: there’s a lot going on here and, thankfully, no one’s singing.

Instead, the teaser is actually a preview of the scene. Sweeping aerial shots of 19th-century Paris, sprawling locations, crowded streets, military formations and smoke-filled battle scenes dominate the footage, underscoring the scale of what is one of the most ambitious French productions ever. More than just introducing the characters, the trailer sells production value, which shows Wretched It is as much a historical epic as it is a literary adaptation.

This approach fits with the ambitions behind the $40 million-plus production, one of the largest French-language films ever financed. like Hollywood Reporter The film represents France’s attempt to reclaim one of its iconic literary classics after decades in which the internationally successful musical – and its 2012 Oscar-winning screen adaptation – became largely Hugo’s masterpiece for international audiences.

Producer Dimitri Rassam has argued that while millions know it Wretched With Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil’s musical, relatively few have experienced Hugo’s original novel on screen. Cavai’s adaptation aims to change that with a version rooted in the author’s text rather than the Broadway score, emphasizing the historical realism, political unrest, and sweeping adventure elements that were often overshadowed by the musical’s enduring popularity.

The all-star French cast is led by Lyndon as Jean Valjean, Rahim as Javert, Noémie Merlant as Fantine, Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavergne as Thénardier, and Vasily Schneider as Marius.

Whether it is enough Wretched Whether it can replace music in the public imagination remains to be seen. But if the teaser is any indication, France is making a very costly case that Hugo’s saga can still dominate the big screen without a single chorus of “Do you hear the people singing?”
