The final six-issue chapter of the hit series will be called Under the trees where no one can see: summer and autumn It will debut in February 2027. Creator Patrick Horvath and publisher IDW are announcing the title and giving a first look Saturday at a San Diego Comic-Con panel discussing horror in comics.
The ending is bittersweet for Horvath, who released the book in 2024 without much fanfare and watched it receive not only accolades like Eisner nominations and a Harvey Award, but also an unexpected continuation of his story; As its success continued, it launched a spin-off series, an art book, and even stuffed animals.
“When I initially pitched Part 1, I honestly thought that would be the end of it, but about halfway through writing and drawing it, I had a spark of what would grow into Parts 2 and 3,” Horvath said in a statement. Hollywood Reporter. “It’s bittersweet to have to end this now, but mostly I feel so much gratitude to IDW that I and the global comics community had the opportunity to give me such an insanely warm welcome.”
With her Ayman Combined with its creepy undertones, Richard centers around a brown bear named Samantha Strong, a seemingly mild-mannered hardware store owner (who is actually a serial killer) who lives on the outskirts of the rural town of Woodbrook. The first story is set in the 1980s, while the second volume, recently completed, is set in the 1990s, at the dawn of the Internet age, culminating in a shocking finale that leaves readers’ jaws on the forest floor.
Jumping forward another decade, the story takes place in 2004 when a small town in America is dead and the country seems stuck in a forever war in the Middle East. Strong, once the most famous and wanted person in the country, has faded into obscurity. She is now in her 60s and trying to live a quiet life off the grid in the desert. She kills when the opportunity presents itself, but she spends her time just surviving. But it is only a matter of time until it is recognized.
“Samantha Strong now finds herself having to answer for all her actions before a world that has become obsessed with true crime, global terrorism, and the slippery idea of righteous violence,” Horvath said, before teasing: “It could all lead to a big change for her, or this could just be the end of the road.”
Under the trees It proved to be a huge success for IDW. To date, the two series, including comics and collections, have sold over 400,000 copies, an enormous amount for what is still a relatively new and original title from an independent publisher.
In addition to the two-story volumes, a large-format artist’s edition, highlighting Horvath’s original illustrated works, will go on sale July 28. A spinoff of the anthology, a Halloween special featuring talents like James Tynion IV and Tony Felix, will be published in October. The plush toys are available for pre-order from IDW.

“With the cover, I wanted to point out the idea that Samantha’s past life has been abandoned, just like a gunslinger burying his pistols, but there’s also the idea of excavation and forensics,” Horvath said.
