Director Caleb Phillips found a home at WME.
It’s the latest move for Phillips, who also recently signed with Underground, the management company she calls home maniaCarrie Parker.
Phillips is best known for his viral horror short film The other side of the boxwhich has garnered over 30 million views since its launch in 2018. It focuses on a couple who are given a mysterious box – with disastrous results.
The film became a calling card for Phillips as he honed his skills as a director while working as a crew member on numerous productions. This was followed up with play with me, It centers on a woman who wakes up in a car with no memory to discover a man tied up in the back seat. Next to her seat is a voice recorder with a note saying “Play with me.”
Phillips comes from South by Southwest for his feature film debut ScammersWhich he wrote and directed. The film stars Jessica Rothe, who plays a mother desperate to get her little boy back after he is kidnapped. When she learns a way to bring her son home, her husband (Charlie Barnett) begins to suspect that the returned child is not really theirs. It’s 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from the festival’s Midnighter section.
His signing to WME comes at a time when filmmakers who cut their teeth online are front and center. Back roomsKen Parsons became the youngest director ever to have a film open at number one last weekend, with the film already becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at A24 domestically. Parker mania Focus is the highest-grossing film of all time domestically, and posted an incredibly rare increase in its second and third weekends at the box office.
Hollywood Reporter An informal poll of agents, managers and executives was recently conducted to name who in this world is poised to break through, and Phillips was among those names.
