Beaches, new musical She is the first Tony victim of the season and will now close on May 24 After being excluded from the nominations.
The show opened at the Majestic Theater on March 27, ahead of its April 22 opening date, but failed to attract audiences and critics, who gave mixed to negative reviews. Last week on Broadway, the musical ran at just 51% capacity, and has grossed $550,000 or less per week since its opening, far less than what it costs to run an average musical.
The show, which stars Jessica Vosk and Kelly Barrett, is likely hoping to get nominations for its roles or for the music itself to help right the ship.
However, the show was always slated for a limited run on Broadway, through September 6, before heading out on a national tour. The production said Tuesday that plans are currently underway for the tour. It comes to Broadway after a development period of nearly 10 years with an international premiere in 2024 at the Calgary Playhouse in Alberta, Canada, with this version of the production also starring Fosk and Barrett.
The plot itself is based on the New York Times The best-selling 1998 film, starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, written by Iris Reiner Dart. The story follows the development of their friendship Cee Cee and Bertie, who meet as children and develop their relationship through marriage, career highs and lows, and illness.

“Bringing a new musical to Broadway is always a monumental undertaking, and we are so proud of this company who have created a production filled with heart, humanity, humor and emotional truth,” said producer Jennifer Maloney Prezioso. “Night after night, audiences laughed, cried, called friends on their way out of the theater, and connected deeply with this story of friendship and love. That impact is real, and will stay with people long after the final curtain falls. We are so grateful to everyone who helped bring Beaches to life at the Majestic Theater, and we look forward to sharing this special show with audiences across America on our national tour.
