Steven Spielberg's film

Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” billed as his first popcorn movie in years, has grossed $44 million in domestic theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film opened largely as expected, collecting US$92.9 million worldwide during its first weekend.

“Disclosure Day” scores the best opening for a Steven Spielberg film

“Revelation Day” brings Spielberg back to the subject of alien life. Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colman Domingo star in a hunt to uncover government evidence of encounters with UFOs. According to box office reports, the film cost US$115 million to produce and US$80 million to market. The film will reportedly need to gross approximately US$300 million globally to justify its price tag.The film’s nearly $100 million debut was good enough to give Spielberg, 79, his best weekend for an original film.

Released by Universal Pictures, “Disclosure Day” is the director’s first summer blockbuster in 10 years. It opened in a completely different cinematic universe than Jaws or Jurassic Park did. Its closest competitor was the indie horror film “Obsession,” directed by YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Cary Parker, who is more than 50 years younger than Spielberg. After driving Gen Z to go to the movies over the past few weeks, a slightly older audience has sparked interest in Disclosure Day.

If it continues as well as some of these other movies, like “Project Hail Mary,” “Michael” and “Obsession,” it will do well.

“Mania” reaches $286 million

Meanwhile, the feeling of “mania” continues. Despite originally opening to $17.2 million, the Focus Features release has topped that amount for four consecutive weekends. It did so again this weekend, collecting $19 million in ticket sales to bring its North American total to $188.3 million and its global total to $286.5 million.Costing less than $1 million to produce, “Obsession” is among the most profitable releases in recent memory. Acquired by Focus for US$15 million. The film is now expected to end its global run with a gross receipts of between US$390 million and US$420 million. If it reaches that range, it will become the highest-grossing live-action original film of the decade.

“Scary Movie” exceeds $88 million

The film that topped the list of films last weekend, “Scary Movie,” fell to third place, earning $14.5 million.

The Paramount Pictures release, the sixth installment in the horror satire series, has fallen sharply since its opening weekend, falling 73%. But with a modest production budget of US$30 million, the Miramax sequel was already a huge success. The two-week domestic total is $88.6 million.A24’s “Back Rooms” added $11.3 million domestic in its third weekend. It quickly grossed US$262.3 million worldwide. In its second weekend, sales of Amazon MGM’s “Masters of the Universe” movie declined rapidly after its disappointing release.
