North North Comedian creators Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and Stacey Aglock MacDonald will receive the Breakthrough Award at Hollywood ReporterWomen in Entertainment Canada Gala on May 28.

The creative duo are showrunners and executive producers of the Netflix, CBC and APTN series set in Canada’s Arctic and around the close-knit Inuit culture. The comedy — led by Anna Lambie as Siaga, a 20-something Inuit woman who makes her way as a plucky civil servant after a spontaneous and very public breakup with her eponymous husband — is now in its second season.

“behind north north, Arnaquq Baril and Ajluk MacDonald have consistently demonstrated the ability to bring bold and innovative perspectives to the screen while creating space for underserved voices and communities to be seen and heard. “It is this combination of vision, influence and progressive momentum that makes them deserving of this honour,” WIE Canada gala organizers said before handing over the award at the Ritz-Carlton in Toronto.

Before their success in scripted comedy, Agluk MacDonald and Arnaquq Baril came from a background in documentaries, and between them have credits such as the 2011 short film. Throat songSports drama 2018 grizzlies, Arnakuk Baril appeared for the first time in a feature documentary with Angry Enoch.

The upcoming third annual WIE Canada Summit will once again bring together the Canadian industry across television, film and music to celebrate and recognize the achievements of the women leading the industry forward. This all-day event is attended by top local producers, actors, musicians and executives.

Aglok MacDonald and Arnaquq-Baril join previously announced honorees, including Andrea Martin to receive the Icon Award and Malin Akerman to receive the Impact Award at the May 28 ceremony. Additional honorees and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks.
