Director SS Rajamouli has shared a major production update about his upcoming film ‘Varanasi’. The director, who is currently shooting for his ambitious Rs 1,400-crore film, took a break from production to head to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where he shared updates on the schedule and more.

Speaking to Variety, Rajamouli confirmed that all the large-scale action scenes in the film have now been shot in IMAX, and noted that the film is progressing at a steady pace. He shared an update about the film, “What I can say is that we have completed a major portion of the shooting, and all the important big action scenes have been completed. We are (now) doing the smaller, interconnected scenes, so hopefully, by September, maybe a little bit in October, we will be done shooting.”

Rajamouli also clarified that the decision to shoot the film starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra for IMAX did not change his creative vision. “From the beginning, we knew that the sequences that were conceived would be best justified,” he said [the] “IMAX format – we haven’t changed anything just in terms of the format.”The director previously revealed that the towering vertical aspects of the Ramayana’s epic 20-minute battle scene required greater coordination to encompass the true scale and scope of the mythological sequences and settings.
Hence, the team decided to go ahead with shooting the film in IMAX.

The upcoming time travel film is scheduled to release in April 2027. According to reports, the film, which has a budget of over Rs 1,000 crore, is said to be one of the most expensive films ever made in India.Rajamouli’s previous films, including RRR, Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, have been widely credited with propelling the scale and ambition of Indian cinema.
