Dua Lipa, a standout singer with catchy melodies and artistic lyrics, has maintained her unique look – being the ultimate ‘it girl’. While her records are off the charts, the 30-year-old singer has always stood her ground and pointed out unauthorized use of her persona and music.
Dua Lipa sued for $15 million
The “New Rules” singer recently sued Samsung Electronics for $15 million for using her image to sell televisions without her permission. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging that the packaging was “designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa’s hard-won success in promoting and selling Samsung products,” according to the BBC. Furthermore, the photo was taken during her performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival, and the “Don’t Start Now” singer owns the copyright to the photo. The document highlights two comments from Instagram, who suggested that they would buy the TV simply because the box contained a picture of Lipa. Meanwhile, the tech giant reportedly ignored flags and demands to cease and desist from violating its rights.
Dua Lipa’s petition against AI models
With the “Training Season” singer making headlines for unauthorized use of her image, this isn’t the first time Dua Lipa has called out a tech giant.
The previous year, the singer signed a petition to the UK government seeking protection against AI bots and fashion models, along with 400 other artists, including Sir Elton John, Florence Welch, Paul McCartney, and others. The open letter was addressed to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer. 400 British artists called for protection from AI models by updating copyright laws, and claimed failure would result in their works being “abandoned”.
The letter said, according to the BBC: “We are wealth creators, we reflect and promote national stories, we are the innovators of the future, and artificial intelligence needs us as much as it needs energy and computer skills.”
However, not everyone agreed on the terms and conditions. Julia Willemens, co-founder of British Progress, said the measures would not prevent foreign films from using their content and work. “A restrictive copyright regime would stray away from AI development, weaken home-grown innovation, and directly harm the UK economy,” she said.
Dua Lipa wins copyright lawsuit against her song “Levitating”
In early 2025, Lipa won a copyright lawsuit for her song “Levitating”, with songwriters L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer accusing her of plagiarizing their 1979 disco hit “Wiggle and Giggle All Night” and their 1980 hit “Don Diablo.” The US judge ruled that the songs had general similarities, highlighting non-copyrighted musical elements previously used by Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan and the Bee Gees in their song “Stayin’ Alive”.
