After the demise of Malayalam actor-director and National Award winner Salim Kumar, fans are recalling many of his old interviews and personal reflections. He once shared his thoughts on life, family and the idea of retiring from acting.
Salim Kumar – Veteran Star Malayalam cinema
Salim Kumar died at the age of 57 after suffering from health complications. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi after his condition deteriorated. Reports stated that he was placed on a ventilator. The actor had also undergone a liver transplant years ago after being diagnosed with cirrhosis.Salim Kumar has remained one of the most loved artists in Malayalam cinema. He became famous for his impeccable comedic timing and unforgettable characters.
Over time, he also proved his mettle as a serious performer through emotionally powerful roles.Born in Paravur, Salim Kumar began his artistic journey through mimicry. He entertained audiences on stage before eventually entering the film industry. His acting debut came with Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam in 1997. Initially, he appeared in small roles. Over the years, his film career has expanded significantly, exceeding 300 films.
When he talked about retiring from acting
Years ago, after receiving the National Award for the film ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’, reports claimed that Salim Kumar was planning to quit acting. During an exclusive conversation with ETimes, the actor addressed the rumours.“Yes, I will retire from acting, but not now, but only in three years. I am 43 years old and I will retire when I turn 46.”This statement surprised many at the time, because the actor was enjoying a successful phase in his career.
Why did Salim Kumar want to move away?
Salim Kumar also clarified that his decision had nothing to do with losing interest in acting.
Instead, he felt that life had many other responsibilities and priorities.“I want to retire not because I’m bored with acting. But I realize that there are better things to do in life. I don’t want to limit myself to acting alone. I am a son, a husband and a father of two children. I have to take care of their needs and interests.”He also shared his thoughts on the idea of retiring in the film industry.“I think acting also has a retirement phase. Unfortunately, no one in the industry is ready to accept that.”
Looking back on his journey
Salim Kumar also reflected on the changing pace of his working life and how his style in films has evolved over time.“Well, there was a time when I used to act in four films a day. But now, I can be more selective. I do not more than one film a day. Like any other actor, I also look for good scripts and want to portray some memorable characters on screen. Even two-year-olds die; after everything I have been able to see, enjoy and achieve in my 43 years on earth. I am happy and satisfied.”Apart from acting, Salim Kumar has also explored writing and directing. His film ‘Karutha Joothan’ later received recognition at the Kerala State Film Awards. Today, his words and works continue to stay with audiences.
