When Ryan Gosling returned to the Saturday Night Live (SNL) stage for his fourth hosting gig, everyone expected a wild, funny ride. What did no one see coming? Harry Styles and Anushka Shankar are storming the party and stealing some thunder for themselves.
What happened?
The March 2026 episode of the comedy show quickly turned into a star-studded spectacle. It wasn’t just the usual mix of graphics and music; It was one of those nights where the celebrity surprises and internet outage moments kept coming. Here’s what happened.
Harry Styles’ explosive comeback turns emotional when the singer makes a heartbreaking confession on stage
Ryan Gosling returns to SNL
Gosling returned for round four, and is now one of SNL’s most entertaining hosts. He kicked off the night with a monologue full of jokes about the upcoming sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary, then jumped into a musical number about Earth.
It’s pretty normal for him, until the camera cuts to Harry Styles sitting in the front row. Suddenly, the entire room’s focus shifted: Forget the monologue, Harry Styles was in the audience.
Harry Styles takes the spotlight
No one expected to see Styles in the audience: not the viewers at home, and not even Gosling, apparently. The Grammy winner showed up because he’s scheduled to host and perform next week, but he couldn’t resist checking things out early.Gosling began his monologue by talking about March being a good time to host SNL in New York, then did a double take.
“Is this Harry Styles?” he asked. The camera panned to Styles, who grinned as the crowd went crazy.“What are you doing here, man?” Gosling asked.“I’m hosting the show next week and it’s been a while so I just wanted to watch and see what’s going on,” Stiles shrugged.“That’s very professional. I wish someone would have told me. I have a new movie coming out, called Project Harry Styles. No — but that’s going to be a good movie,” Gosling laughed.
It’s actually called the Hail Mary Project. He continued, “People say it’s like ET meets Interstellar, which is weird because those are two of the best movies ever made, so what — double that? I don’t know, I didn’t say that.”As Gosling talked about perspective and space movies, the camera found Styles again, nodding. Gosling paused. “Sorry, why are we at Harry Styles?” Stiles smiled and said, “I don’t know, I’m just listening.”“Well, can you listen less coolly? Your composure is kind of an issue,” Gosling responded.Later, Gosling sang a bit of Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” then switched to Barbie’s now-iconic “I’m just Ken.” It was messy, funny, and totally on-brand for both of them.
Anushka Shankar’s outstanding performance
And then, on the musical part, another surprise: Anoushka Shankar, the world-famous sitar player, joined Gorillaz on stage for their new song “The Moon Cave.”
The set was packed: Asha Puthli, Black Thought and Shankar together, mixing genres and styles you don’t see on SNL every week.Sitar Shankar brought an unmistakable, classic Indian sound to the track, making the performance stand out from the usual SNL fare. For Shankar, who is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, it was another big moment in the spotlight, and a very cool way to introduce the sitar to a large American audience. For those who aren’t interested, Harry Styles just released his fourth studio album, “Kiss All The Time.” Disco, sometimes, and he’s set to host SNL next week. So, this week’s appearance certainly felt like a dress rehearsal for him.
