Piyush Mishra once again speaks candidly about his marriage, this time shedding light on why his wife chose to stay despite his infidelity. “She said, ‘I will not divorce you no matter what,’” the actor-writer said, recalling her unwavering stance, even as he reflected on his belated understanding of responsibility as a husband, a phase he had earlier documented in his memoir Tumhari Awqat Kya Hai, Piyush Mishra.
“Now I’m a good husband, I wasn’t like that before.”
In a conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Piyush reflected on his journey as a partner, and admitted his shortcomings in the initial years of marriage. He said: “Now I am a good husband; I was not like that earlier. At that time, I was not responsible at all, and marriage is a very big responsibility. When you fall in love at 20, there is no logic to it, and that is the beauty of it. But after 35, you love the person who wants to grow old with you.”He added: “Love is the woman who prepared to grow old with you, and agreed to grow old with me.”
“It took me 10 to 15 years to realize she was my wife.”
The actor went on to make an eye-opening confession about how long it took him to truly acknowledge his marriage.“I accepted very late that I was a husband, and it took me a long time. Almost 10 to 15 years to realize that she was my wife. Before that, she was just a woman who took care of my children, cooked for me, and took care of the house.”
I admitted that I had no feelings beyond that.Describing his emotional state at the time, he said: “I was a very dry person, not just with Priya, but with everything. I didn’t feel anything.”
“After Vipassana, I started to feel.”
Piyush credited introspection and spiritual practice for the shift in his outlook.“Over the past 15 years, after practicing Vipassana, I have begun to feel. I have begun to understand that the other person is also suffering and deserves compassion.
Before that, I was a strange guy, very antisocial. If I didn’t have a job, I would probably feel completely isolated. Work saved me.
“She said she wouldn’t divorce me no matter what.”
When asked why his wife chose to stay despite his infidelity, Piyush spoke about her unwavering commitment.“She loved me. She ran away from home for me and married me against her parents’ wishes. She sacrificed a lot. She said, ‘I will not divorce you no matter what. You can do anything, but I will not leave you,'” he revealed.Acknowledging her strength, he added: “Her greatness was that she stayed with me. Today I understand that, there is no other word to describe it. Her greatness was that she was able to hold the marriage together. I am lucky.”

“We told each other everything and we felt light.”
Piyush also spoke about his wife being honest about his past mistakes. He said: “When I realized my mistakes, I sat her down one day and told her everything I had done. We were crying and hugging each other. After that, we felt lighter.”Recalling her response, he added: “She said: ‘I made mistakes, and I did too. I made more, and I did less. Let’s end this here.'” “Our understanding has become very strong.”
“If she had made a mistake, I would have forgiven her too.”
When asked how he would react if the roles were reversed, Piyush said: “If I had made mistakes, I would have forgiven them too. It is not possible for just one person to make mistakes, I must have done my share too.”The actor concluded by revealing that it took years for both of them to reach complete honesty.“We needed to improve our lives – and it wasn’t just about me. Priya was struggling too, and so was I. We were going through a tough mental phase,” he said.“It took 5-6 years to finally say everything. One day, we decided to do it. At first, it was a shock for both of us. But then, life became much better. There was nothing to hide anymore – and then we could move on.”Piyush married Priya Narayanan in 1995, and they have two sons.
