StudioCanal is developing an animated television series for Pippi Longstocking with David Heyman’s Heyday Films, Submarine and the Astrid Lindgren Company.

Screenwriter Sarah Duddy is working on a script for the series based on Pippi Longstocking, the famously strong, energetic and cute girl with red braids from Astrid Lindgren’s classic book series. StudioCanal and Heyday Films, who together produced hugely successful films Paddington and Paddington 2was initially considered a film based on the popular red-headed children’s character, before being settled on the current modern retelling of the Longstocking character for television.

First appearing in print in 1945 and based on the stories Swedish author Lindgren told her daughter, the Pippi Longstocking books have since been translated into 80 languages and sold more than 90 million copies worldwide. There have already been several TV and film adaptations.

StudioCanal will handle global distribution for the TV series, and production is scheduled to begin next October. Production credits are shared between David Heyman, Rosie Allison, Rob Silva, Simon Quinn, and Karen Davidsen, with Ron Halpern overseeing for StudioCanal.

“Peppy Longstocking is a beloved icon, with her own unique, unpredictable way of seeing the world. Funny, energetic, playful, contrarian, kind, and fiercely resilient, she questions all the rules of the game, and her authenticity remains as fresh as ever. We couldn’t be more excited about unleashing Pepe once again in her new animated series, in collaboration with spirit writer Sarah Duddy, the creative animation team at Heyday,” Heyman, Alison and Silva at Heyday said in a statement: Submarine, Astrid Lindgren and StudioCanal.
