Iconic Irish actress Brenda Fricker, whose memorable performances in My Left Foot, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and the BBC medical drama brought her international fame, has died at the age of 81.
She passed away on Thursday in Dublin.
Fricker made history as the first Irish actress to receive an Academy Award, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful performance in My Left Foot.Her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed her departure in a statement to the BBC, saying: “We will never see her like her again, and the world is less fortunate with her absence.”He added: “I was honored to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the hearts of many film and television fans around the world.”
Fricker won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990 for playing the mother of Daniel Day-Lewis’ character in My Left Foot. The performance became the defining achievement of her career and secured her place among Ireland’s most celebrated screen talents.Throughout a career that spans film, television, and theater, Fricker has built an impressive body of work. One of her most prominent television roles is that of nurse Megan Roach in the BBC series “Casualty,” where she appeared in the first episode of the program in 1986.
Although she left as a regular cast member in 1990, she returned for several guest appearances, with her final episode airing in 2010.She is also widely remembered for playing the compassionate pigeon lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), sharing some of the film’s most poignant moments with Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister. Born in Dublin, Fricker began her acting career in theater before establishing herself in television and film.
