Once upon a time, the competition with Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, actor Avinash Wadhawan left India after marriage, and this is what he is doing now: “I didn't have to..”

There was a time when Avinash Wadhawan was counted among the brightest rising stars of Bollywood. In the early 1990s, the actor was signing several films, sharing screen space with the industry’s leading heroines, and was even in the running for projects that later became milestones in the careers of Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and

Akshay Kumar

. However, while his contemporaries continued to rule Bollywood, Avinash gradually disappeared from the mainstream.

Today, he is only seen occasionally in TV shows and on OTT platforms. Here’s a look at why the promising actor’s career took an unexpected turn.Interestingly, acting was not Avinash’s first career choice. He was an academically gifted student and consistently received scholarships during his college studies, which helped reduce the financial burden on his family. After getting his engineering degree from Delhi College of Engineering, he plans to pursue an MBA.

Although he got admission in IIM Lucknow, he eventually joined Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management in Mumbai.

While earning his MBA, fate intervened. A leading fashion designer noticed him and offered him modeling assignments. What started as a side opportunity quickly turned into a thriving career. Within a year, Avinash appeared in nearly 67 ads, commercials and fashion shows.

As modeling assignments increased, balancing academics became impossible, forcing him to drop out after only two semesters.Determined to get into films, Avinash prepared a video file and sent it to several filmmakers. The gamble paid off. After making his film debut in the late 1980s, he rose to fame with the film “Ayee Milan Ki Raat”, which was a commercial success and established him as a leading hero. Capitalizing on the popularity of the film, he starred in approximately 17 to 18 films over the next four to five years, making him one of the busiest actors of the era.He went on to appear in films like ‘Balmaa’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Dil Ki Baazi’, ‘Geet’ and ‘Papi Gudia’, alongside prominent actresses including Divya Bharti and Zeba Bakhtiar.

and

Mamta Kulkarni

. At the time, he was seen by producers as one of Bollywood’s most reliable young heroes, and he would often compete for the same projects with actors who would later become stars. However, while his career was on the rise, his personal life began to crumble.

Avinash married in 1990 and became a father while still in his mid-twenties. Over time, his personal struggles began to affect his work, which he later admitted was a huge mistake.Speaking to Siddharth Kannan in 2024, Avinash spoke about that phase and said, “I should not have let my personal problems affect my professional life. I left India and was spending my time in Vancouver and Los Angeles. I went to shoot a film and did not come back.”His long stay abroad alienated him from filmmakers and producers at a time when the Indian film industry was developing rapidly, and opportunities were quickly dwindling.During the same conversation, Avinash claimed that he missed many films that later became iconic. According to him, he was originally offered ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, but after exiting the project, this was Ajay Devgn’s debut.

He also revealed that he was nominated for the role in Deewana which eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan but he turned it down due to date issues, as he wanted to focus only on single hero films at that time.Another big opportunity was missed with Yeh Dillagi. Avinash said he lost the project after arriving late to meet director Yash Chopra, after which the role went to him

Saif Ali Khan

Next to Akshay Kumar. The actor also claimed that during 1991 and 1992, he was the preferred choice of many filmmakers and is believed to have been ahead of Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar at that time.

While these actors became some of the biggest stars of Indian cinema, Avinash’s career gradually lost momentum.Reflecting on the consequences of those missed opportunities, Avinash admitted that he was emotionally exhausted and decided to take a break from acting for about two years. But when he eventually returned, Bollywood had moved on. Leading roles dried up, and although he made occasional appearances, he was never able to reclaim the stardom he once seemed destined for. When film offers started dwindling, Avinash found it difficult to accept the transition from lead role to actor. The transition wasn’t easy, but changing priorities ultimately shaped his decisions. The actor has openly admitted that after remarrying, securing financial stability became more important than chasing stardom, which led him to turn to television for steady work. His last big screen appearance came in the 2018 film ‘Mausam Ikrar Ke Do Pal Pyaar Ke’.

Recently, he was seen in JioHotstar’s ‘Sangamarmar’, a romantic drama backed by Rajshree Productions with Sooraj Barjatya playing the showrunner.Today, Avinash continues to be active across television, regional cinema and OTT platforms. Although he never regained the leading position he once had, he has continued to continually work, adapting to the changing entertainment landscape. His career is a reminder of how unpredictable the film industry is, where success depends not only on talent, but also on timing, personal choices, and the ability to stay connected to the industry.
