The miracle manThe timing couldn’t be worse. The streaming bubble burst during its development, leading to an internal re-evaluation by Marvel Studios. Even after narrowly weathering a Wall Street correction, the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were halted mid-season, with no guarantee it would resume. After all, HBO Max is shockingly on shelves Batgirl The tax repeal movie was still up in the air, and popular culture was busy writing obituaries for the superhero genre after a string of poor box office performances from both Marvel and DC.
“The miracle man It was definitely a weak project. “We were one of the last projects on the doorstep when there was a mandate from Disney for Marvel to get as much done as possible,” says co-creator and showrunner Andrew Guest.
Fellow co-creator and director of episodes one and two, Destin Daniel Cretton, credits Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the rest of the company with championing the aptly titled series during unprecedented times. “This show has many lives. There was a lot of drama behind the scenes. It would definitely have been canceled at another studio,” adds Cretton, who will publish in July. Spider-Man: A Brand New Day.
Another one of the many reasons the guest was so concerned about The miracle manThe future of Marvel was such that it was a creative risk for Marvel. It’s not a series about a superhero who’s also a struggling actor. It’s a series that revolves around a struggling actor, whose secret superpowers are the bane of his existence. In other words, it’s about the characters, not the scene.
Visual effects supervisor John Haley appreciates that The miracle manof the six MCU series he has worked on, he has approximately “half as many” visual effects shots.

The story of Simon Williams, also known as the Wonder Man, actually begins with Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. In the 2020 collection Shang Qi and the Legend of the Ten RingsIn the 1990s, Cretton and his producer Jonathan Schwartz spit out a spinoff series that would chronicle the disgraced stage actor’s attempt to restart his career after universal condemnation for playing the real-life Mandarin terrorist.
Creighton’s art department went so far as to design a mock poster titled Trevor goes to Hollywoodbut Marvel was already developing the Hollywood-centric film The miracle manWhich leads to a creative fusion between the two.
Inspired by Midnight CowboyGuest then screened his winning film involving an unlikely friendship between two lonely, narcissistic actors as they jointly pursue career-making, career-saving roles in… The miracle man film. With Kingsley joining first, Cretton championed the casting of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the role of Simon. The two had met a general before The miracle manBut seeing Abdul-Mateen’s diverse performance on Broadway Topdog/Underdog Reinforced Creighton’s idea. He then brought in Guest and Marvel executives, only for Abdul-Mateen himself to be the only holdout.
Surprisingly, his tenure Aquaman The troubled DC Extended Universe villain Black Manta had no influence on his cautious approach to accepting the Marvel role.

The New Orleans native compares his decision-making process to only having a dollar to spend in the MCU and wanting to use it wisely. That meant requesting a call with Feige — a move his reps warned could make him appear high-maintenance — like Simon in the first episode, when he was fired American Horror Story To choose his only scene as a daily player. “I had the nerve to say, ‘No, I need to talk to the summit,’” Abdul-Mateen recalls.
Needless to say, the call went well. “Kevin was just game. I told him I wanted to be human and funny — and he said that’s why they wanted me,” Abdul-Mateen says.
Abdul-Mateen would then discover that Kingsley had his own meticulous process for sizing up his collaborators. After accepting the role, Abdul-Mateen made an offer to build an off-screen relationship in service of their on-screen relationship, but to his surprise, Kingsley declined the offer.
Kingsley said he would prepare independently, noting that the time for them to discover each other would come on set. If Abdul-Mateen requested any changes to the text, he had to address them immediately, before Kingsley memorized them.

“Because he was so independent in his preparation, it put a wound on my shoulder,” says Abdul-Mateen, who first earned his scene partner’s respect by showing up to the one-table read completely off-book. “So I’m really happy with the way things turned out. We formed our own roadmaps and shared them with each other that day,” he says.
The stakes of the series are less rooted in whether or not Simon and Trevor will get lead roles The miracle man (Yes, she’s meta) And more about whether Simon’s volatile powers that can cause explosions will derail his entire life. The additional problem is that Trevor, as part of his unfulfilled prison sentence, is reluctantly working on behalf of the Department of Damage Control (DODC) to gather evidence against Simon.
It is now illegal for superhumans to act on movie sets after a tragic incident years ago involving DeMarr “Doorman” Davis (Byron Bowers) and a fictionalized version of Josh Gad.
Inspired by anthology episodes from Atlanta The previous guest showed, communityEpisode 4’s “Doorman” flashes forward to tell the cautionary tale of how DeMarr became a super-powered entry. Shortly after coming into contact with a mysterious black goo, DeMarr, with his newfound ability to act as a human portal, provided safe passage to Jade and the others during a nightclub fire.

Hollywood quickly turned DeMarr into an overnight sensation. Then, when his 15 minutes of fame was running out and his powers were destabilized by heavy drinking, DeMarr accidentally trapped Gad inside him during a cutscene that went wrong.
When Gad was asked to play a strange, intense version of himself, he was flattered by what he described as his “weirdest” acting opportunity yet. But for fear of disqualifying himself from playing a proper MCU character, he also requested to have his own conversation with Feige before signing on the dotted line. “Kevin lied to me through his teeth and said, ‘We’ll definitely make sure you play another character,'” Gad joked. “Maybe he’ll call me in 50 years to play my version of the Robert Redford-Harrison Ford bureaucrat role in the final stretch.”
From a distance of 30 thousand feet, The miracle man It is a tribute to dreamers, especially those who come to Los Angeles to pursue their greatest ambitions with determination. Thus, Los Angeles became the only option for filming the show, and Marvel and The miracle man The team was determined to make it happen with or without a tax credit. The show was filmed at a number of Los Angeles landmarks, including the TCL Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but focused more on capturing a lot of favorite local landmarks and less photographed areas.
After Simon and Trevor’s first audition for… The miracle manthey go for drinks at Taix, a 99-year-old French restaurant in Echo Park that Guest and Cretton frequented during the beginning of their careers.
Cretton also visited some of the same neighborhoods where he shot his first two independent films, I’m not a hipster and Short term 12. Even Simone’s modest apartment set on Lexington Avenue evoked Creighton’s beginnings Humble. “I could almost smell the mildew in my first apartment in Echo Park, when I was living off 99-cent burritos and Top Ramen,” he says.

Simon and Trevor ended up getting lead roles The miracle manbut when Trevor is later forced to reveal his informant arrangement with DODC, Simon, fueled by heartbreak and rage, proceeds to blow up an entire building. The miracle man Soundstage, a sequence that Haley considers the season’s piece de resistance due to the intricate teamwork across multiple departments. The season ends with Simon letting Trevor out of prison because he fell for him.
The response to Marvel’s unconventional series was so positive that Disney ordered a second season, a rarity for Marvel shows. Guest says Season 2 will take into account Simon and Trevor’s legal situation without giving away their charming dynamic as actors. “Simon makes a real friend for the first time in his life. “For him as a person, this will be more important to him than any dream role,” Guest says. Did Abdul-Mateen get his dollar’s worth? The miracle manHe answered emphatically: “Yes, man.”
