Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth's 'KH x RK' may be released in 2027; Dussehra or Diwali window with eyes - reports

The most awaited film in Indian cinema, KH x RK, which stars Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, is eyeing a 2027 festival release, possibly during Dussehra or Diwali. The shooting is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music in a retro style. Rumors also point to a possible appearance by Mammootty.

The upcoming film titled ‘KH x RK’ has already become one of the most talked about projects in Indian cinema and the reason is very simple – the film will bring together two legendary stars, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, on screen after a very long gap. According to the latest industry buzz, the makers are said to be targeting a festival release window of 2027. However, an official confirmation regarding the release date is yet to be made.

The festival’s release window is in 2027

Reports indicate that the film may hit theaters during one of the major festival seasons. According to a report by 123 Telugu, ‘KH x RK’ may release either during Dussehra or Diwali in 2027.The same report also notes that filming is expected to begin sometime in August 2026, and if the schedule continues as planned, production will likely take place over several months.

Anirudh Ravichander Share the update

Composer Anirudh Ravichander recently spoke about the project in a conversation with India Today. Talking about the schedule, Anirudh said, “I think the film will probably release next year. There is a lot of hype and hype around it.” He also shared details about his musical style in the film. Anirudh revealed that he had previously composed peppy group songs for both the stars, and this time he wanted to try a different sound.

The composer explained that he chose a retro style to match the tone of the trailer, and also expressed his happiness at the positive response to the promotional song “Aaja Raja”.

Filming begins after current projects

Reports indicate that both leading stars will not start filming until they complete their current commitments. According to Filmibeat, the schedule largely depends on their ongoing projects. Rajinikanth has already completed the lead work on Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.

After the promotional shoot for KH x RK, he reportedly took a short break.If the current schedule remains unchanged, Rajinikanth is expected to start shooting for Thalaivar 173 in April 2026. The star will move on to KH x RK only after the completion of this film.Kamal Haasan also needs to finish his current commitments before starting work on the film. Due to these timelines, principal photography is expected to begin in either late 2026 or early 2027.

Mammootty Cameo rumors surface

Meanwhile, new industry rumors have added another layer of excitement. Reports suggest that Malayalam superstar Mammootty may feature in the film.If reports are accurate, Mammootty could be playing a guest role as an old gangster friend of Kamal Haasan’s character.A post shared on the Hey Opinions Twitter page claimed, “Almost confirmed! #Mammootty will play a guest role in the #KHxRK film as an old gangster friend of #KamalHaasan’s character. Kamal has always wanted to share the screen with Mammootty, and it was his suggestion to bring Mammootty on board for the film…!” However, the makers have not officially confirmed the casting details.Mammootty’s last outing in Tamil was ‘Peranbu’.
