Janhvi Kapoor recently spoke about her first encounter with deepfakes, revealing how she once found morphed photos of herself circulating online when she was a teenager. The actress admitted that while she initially tried to normalize the experience, it still bothers her today.
‘I saw a picture of me on Porn site ‘
In her interview with Raj Chamani, Janhvi shared that her first experience with what she now knows as deepfakes happened during her school days. “I don’t know if it was a deepfake, but it was something like that. I saw a picture of me on a porn website,” she said.Recalling that moment, she added: “We had IT lessons at school and the boys would go to those sites for fun. My pictures were there. This was at school. So that was a strange experience.”She said at the time that she tried to justify it. “At some point, I said to myself: ‘This is the cost you have to pay. There are no ethics in a lot of these things with social media,'” she said, adding that her perspective has since changed.
“I’m not at peace with her”
Reflecting on the present, the actress admitted that she is still suffering from the impact of this content. “I’m not comfortable with that. There are pictures of me, even shared across official news pages, that are completely artificial intelligence.
“I have never dressed like this or been photographed like this,” she said. She pointed out how easily these images distort reality. “It’s being circulated as if it’s something you posted. That creates a certain kind of impression,” she added.Janhvi also highlighted how this has affected her work. “If I told a director tomorrow that I wasn’t comfortable wearing something, anyone could pull up those photos and say, ‘But you’ve done this before.’
“Even if they don’t say it, it makes you think,” she explained.
“I don’t feel like I have that much of a voice.”
Despite her discomfort, Janhvi admitted that she often feels hesitant to speak publicly. “It bothers me, of course,” she said. “But I feel like I don’t have enough voice to complain.”She added that perceptions of privilege further complicate the problem. “There’s this attitude of ‘You’ve got a lot in life, so don’t complain.’ So I don’t think my voice has that credibility yet.
“There will be backlash, and that could throw the case away,” she said. But she confirmed that this issue is widespread. “It’s not just me. I think a lot of others have talked about this as well,” she added.

Advocates non-consensual sexism
The actor also addressed the way women, especially public figures, are portrayed and consumed. Recalling her recent interaction with the paparazzi, she said: “I told them – it’s aggressive, not consensual. Even if we go out dressed a certain way, we don’t expect someone to zoom in on a body part.”She added: “For the sake of money and opinions, you are commodifying a woman’s body against her will. How do you respect yourself when you do that?”At the same time, she acknowledged the larger trend. “Sexual content is the most consumed content globally. That’s why it’s constantly promoted,” she said.
“I can’t stop caring”
Janhvi concluded her talk by reflecting on how such narratives have shaped public perception and her career. “The perception that is created influences audiences, filmmakers and the kind of opportunities I get,” she said. She described it as a “tragedy of the human mind,” adding, “It’s wrong, but it is what it is.”While she wishes she could ignore the matter, she admitted that is not possible at the moment. “I wish I could say I don’t care, but this is important. I’m not in a position of power where I can say that and get a job at the same time,” she said.“For now, I’ll play it safe, and do what I have to do, until I build that credibility. Then maybe I can do things my way,” she signed off.
