According to PEOPLE, Jake’s parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michelle Reiner, 70, were found dead in their home in Brentwood, California, in December 2025.

Jake’s younger brother Nicholas, 32, was arrested about six hours after the incident was discovered and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.Nicholas insisted on pleading not guilty to the charges against him. The Los Angeles County District Attorney pursued the case by calling it “special circumstances,” a legal designation that could make Nicholas eligible for either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Reiner family also includes Jake’s sister Rumi, 28, and half-sister Tracy, 61, whom Rob shares with his first wife, the late Penny Marshall.

I was ecstatic,” he wrote. “The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to find out what the hell just happened.”

The love they have for me and my brother and sister is truly unconditional. The love they have for each other in their marriage is something I’ve always looked to as a standard for what a successful relationship looks like,” Jake said.
