EE Times Review
The ETimes review gives a balanced view of the film, “Happy is well-meaning but down-on-his-luck, unlucky in love and slow on the uptake. His father is a miserly teacher, and the combination of the two makes Happy something of a local joke.”The review continues, “The body-shaming that begins with Kathamuthu’s moniker doesn’t stay with him, but is passed on to Happy and spans generations, and is revisited so often that what begins as a gag morphs into something racy, grotesque.”He further adds, “When Happy gets a job in an IT company in Bangalore and meets Kavya (Sri Gauri Priya), the film finds its groove. Kavya does love him, but her condition is that his family formally approaches hers.”
Her father Rajeev (Abbas, returning to Tamil cinema after more than a decade) is an NRI, and when he clashes with Kathamuthu, the cultural clash between the city-bred father and the village traditionalist becomes the film’s drive.
“The review notes that “Parts of the fathers’ boxing showdown are enjoyable, although they often feel contrived. There are plenty of feel-good scenes with exaggerated characters that you can’t buy.”Heading into its second weekend, ‘Happy Raj’ needs stronger word of mouth to improve its run.Disclaimer: Box office numbers and data in this article are compiled from public and industry sources.
