Creator l God of war He didn’t hold back when he saw the first image released of Prime Video’s big-budget version of the hit PlayStation game.
David Jaffe took to YouTube and ripped down almost every element of the simple photo that shows star Ryan Hurst as Kratos with his son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, hunting in the forest. From Hearst’s expression and posture to Atreus’ coiffed hair, to the fake rock in the background, Jaffe had plenty of notes.
“I’m sure everyone is trying hard, but it’s a very stupid photo,” Jaffe said (below), adding that it was a “terrible photo.”
Jaffe said he doesn’t care about the ways in which Hurst’s Kratos looks different from the game: “A good actor is a good actor, and that’s all you need. I’d rather have a great actor who captures the essence of the character and makes the character likable or memorable or iconic rather than having him look exactly like the person in the video game.”
Buuuuuut…
“It’s very bad in many ways,” he marveled. “[Kratos] It just looks stupid. If you were going to reveal to most people a brand new character that you’re hoping to carry your series for the first time, and they’ve never seen them before, this is how you introduce it to them? maybe [Prime Video’s team was] Like, “We really want to focus on the father-son story, and if we focus on it, like Spartan Fury, people will probably say, I don’t want to watch that show.” But can you find a photo that doesn’t look like he’s pooping in the woods? Because that’s what it looks like…none of these characters seem interesting or attractive. If this were God of War: Dumb and Dumber Edition, this is what you would expect, as if it were a comedy.

Jaffe continued: “Hearst, after this official look was released, [reacted to fan backlash on Instagram by writing]“Don’t believe everything you see on the Internet, kids.” Well, then why would Prime Video release it? This isn’t something behind the scenes that someone snuck up on [in and photographed] From the group. This is an official statement from Amazon, which produces the show. So I don’t know what the fuck is [his comment] means.”
Then there was the poetry of Atreus. “It looks like his hair has a lot of product in it,” he said. “He looks like a very confused little kid who has a lot of product in his hair.”
Annnnnd That rock: “The most offensive thing about this whole picture is the Styrofoam rock. You might think of the world of computers and artificial intelligence and over a century of real-time movie magic, practical effects…the rock…maybe well…it’s not lighting it properly. This looks like what you would go into a hobby store and buy for your damn train set.”
All told: Despite being dissatisfied with almost every aspect of the first official photo of God of warJavi still has a lot of hope for the series, which he emphasized at the beginning of his comments.
“[Showrunner] “Ron Moore is great,” he said, noting that he was behind the Syfy reboot Battlestar Galactica And Stars Outlander And also worked on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. “The man is a juggernaut of a talented fellow. I have no doubt it will be a good show. I’m not worried about the show.”
Prime Video had no immediate comment.
God of war He already has a two-season commitment. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E. O. Toy (SHogun) Directing the first two episodes. The series will follow the story of the two most recent God of war Games, where Kratos and Atreus “embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
