Donald Trump was booed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
The President took the stage at MetLife Stadium (referred to as the New York New Jersey Championship Stadium), located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the trophy to tournament champions Spain after the team’s 1-0 overtime victory over Argentina.
As the two men walked out onto the field, boos could be heard coming from the crowd.
On July 6, Trump confirmed that he had personally intervened to help overturn the suspension of American soccer star striker Folarin Balogun, following the controversial red card against him. Trump said he called Infantino, prompting FIFA to suspend the red card decision, thus allowing Balogun to compete in the Round 16 match against Belgium. (The United States lost that match 4-1.)
The reaction against the move was a mixture of anger and disappointment, especially among Belgians, as one might expect.
It was said that the reversal was unprecedented: according to new york times, This was the first time FIFA had disallowed a red card since 1962.
Trump arrived at the stadium on Sunday at Marine One. The helicopter flew over the stadium about 45 minutes before the start of the match. Watch the match from the VIP section behind the glass with Infantino.
