The popular American spy thriller “The Americans” has been reimagined for Korean audiences as “The Koreans.” Starring the talented Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min, this film adaptation transports viewers to the turbulent 1990s, where two North Korean agents disguise themselves as a model family in South Korea to carry out their covert operations.
“The Americans,” a popular American drama series based on two Russian spies residing in the United States, will be getting a Korean remake. The series, which became a fan favorite at the time of its release, will now get a remake starring Lee Byung Hun and Han Ji Min.
The Korean version of “The Americans” has been confirmed.
According to Deadline, Lee Byun Hun and Han Ji Min are all set for a brand new project. Production of the series has already begun. Eric Scherer, president of International Domestic Originals, noted that when the idea was first brought up he was “hesitant” about it and wasn’t sure what a new Korean version of a show like this would look like. The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Schreyer had a lot of things to consider before the project came to fruition.
“I was the guy who developed The Americans. I’m still very close to Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, the creators of the originals, so I wasn’t sure about this idea, because it’s all very near and dear to my heart,” he shared.He detailed how the Korean team of the remake project was the one who most inspired him to pursue the project. “It was the passion of our Korean team that really got me excited – and I could see that with Korea still so divided, this could be a very culturally relevant story for the local audience, which is always a key priority for our local original content.”

The series will reportedly be set in the 1990s, when reforms were underway in the country, and democracy and cultural modernization had swept the country. The show will focus on a Korean family hiding a secret that could lead to their eventual demise if it is ever revealed.Two North Korean spies are sent to South Korea in disguise, and make a living in order to infiltrate the country and its government from within. The upcoming series will be directed by none other than Ahn Gilho, best known for his work in “The Glory.”
