In a much-needed win for Pixar’s core mission of delivering original storytelling, Hoppers Positioned to deliver the iconic animation studio with its biggest opening in nearly a decade for a non-franchise title. Conversely, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new film is based on the 1935 film Bride of Frankensteinin danger of abandonment at the altar.
Disney expects an $88 million global debut for the film Hoppers. The last time a Pixar movie did a good job was Coco in 2017. In North America, tracking indicates it could open anywhere from $36 million to $40 million, with room to rise. He is also expected to come in very quickly before Gyllenhaal Bride!which Warner Bros. believes It will open to a range of $16 million to $18 million domestically and roughly $38 million worldwide, though mixed reviews could certainly drag down the $80 million film. (It goes without saying that the two films couldn’t be more different.)
Hoppers It has the advantage of arriving in theaters on the heels of a huge Disney animated film Zootopia 2providing further proof that there’s still a huge appetite for family fare in the post-pandemic era if the film resonates with moviegoers. Pixar films were once known for appealing to adults but not children; Hoppers It’s getting the kind of rave reviews from critics that might bring those fans back (Zootopia 2which grossed $1.86 billion worldwide to rank as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated picture of all time, also attracted general audiences).
Until late Wednesday, HoppersThe critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 97 percent, one of the highest in years for Pixar. Audience reactions were similar from early access screenings, with moviegoers also praising the film’s creativity and humor.
In the comedic adventure, animal lover Mabel (Piper Korda) seizes the opportunity to use new technology to “transfer” her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver and communicate directly with the animals. As she uncovers mysteries beyond anything she could have imagined, Mabel befriends a charismatic beaver named King George (Bobby Moynihan), and must rally the entire animal kingdom to confront an imminent major human threat: the smooth-talking local mayor Jerry Generazo (Hamm). The voice cast also includes Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, Meryl Streep, Eduardo Franco, Aparna Nancherla, Tom Law, Sam Richardson, Melissa Villasenor, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Steve Purcell, Ego Nwodim, Nicole Sakura, Karen Hui, and Vanessa Bayer.
Hoppers Directed by Daniel Chung, with production by Nicole Paradis Grindel and Mark Mothersbaugh providing the original score. The picture will be shown in 4,000 theaters in North America, including more than 400 Imax screens, 1,000 large format screens and more than 2,200 3D screens. Overseas, it is opening in 81 percent of markets, with staggered releases planned in Japan (March 13), China (March 20) and Australia (March 26).
Although Pixar has good reasons to feel hopeful, no one envies the position Warner Bros. and Gyllenhaal stand in. Bride! Getting ready to walk down the aisle. The R-rated gothic romance made headlines on Wednesday, both for getting lukewarm reviews and for comments Gyllenhaal made on a podcast saying that Warner film studio executives Pamela Abdi and Michael De Luca had asked her to remove some of the film’s more violent scenes (she also shouted out Abdi for “getting me”).

Bride! It marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial film following the award-winning indie drama Missing daughterStarring Olivia Colman and Buckley. All three women have been nominated for a slew of awards by various organizations, including Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay (Gyllenhaal), Best Actress (Coleman), and Best Supporting Actress (Buckley). This year Buckley was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film Hamnet.
Abdi and Di Luca have had an impressive winning streak that has earned them big points and goodwill, culminating with two of their films, Sinners and Battle after battlebeing in the lead in the Oscar race for Best Picture (Hamnet is another).
Bride! It will be shown in more than 3,200 theaters in North America, and will also have a footprint in Imax and other premium formats.
