British actress Carey Mulligan, who stars in Season 2 of Beef, recently spoke about the characters in the show, along with the themes explored in the new season.
Mulligan shares the screen with Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.
Carey Mulligan talks about the themes of “Beef” Season 2.
Speaking to the BBC about her latest series, Beef Season 2, Carey Mulligan said the age difference between the lead couple creates a feeling of “mutual contempt”, adding that this gap plays a key role in the story. She said: “They cannot tolerate us, and we cannot tolerate them. Everything they do is annoying, especially after the inciting incident in the entire series.”
We have a common enemy in them, and this is how we stay together.
“She further explains that the tense relationship between the central couple is held together in part by their shared discomfort with the Gen Z couple, for whom everything seems to be working out.“Their relationship is really hanging by a thread, and in fact, it’s their mutual disdain for this Gen Z couple, and all the annoying things about them, that connects us,” she added.
Oscar Isaac also spoke about the show, saying: “This really rubs us the wrong way. There’s also a cynicism we have about their outlook on love – all these plans and things that they seem so sure of, when they haven’t experienced any of the real risks of being in a relationship.” Mulligan also revealed that she and Isaac would often tease her younger co-stars about being a “Generation Z” couple on the series. “We were always trying to find ways to be more annoyed with them,” she said.
We called them ‘the kids’, which seems unfair because I think Charles is 33 years old.
