'Banning films serves no purpose': Shashi Ranjan hails Diljit Dosanjh-starrer 'Satluj' as 'one of the best films I have ever seen', amid global OTT removal

Director Shashi Ranjan described ‘Satluj’ as one of the best films he has seen, praising its emotional story. He criticized the removal of OTT, arguing that the ban only serves to arouse curiosity and that the history shown on screen does not mislead educated youth. Diljit Dosanjh’s film, previously titled Punjab ’95, was pulled from ZEE5 within 48 hours due to excessive depiction of police.

Director and actor Shashi Ranjan spoke about the film ‘Satluj’ and its removal from the OTT platform. He praised the film’s story and emotional depth, describing it as one of the best films he had seen in recent times.

He recently noted its strong narrative and powerful performances. On removing the film from OTT, Shashi Ranjan expressed his disagreement with banning films rooted in historical themes, adding that such restrictions often create greater curiosity in the audience instead. He added that the depiction of history through cinema does not mislead today’s informed youth, and expressed his hope that the film will return to the digital platform soon.

Shashi Ranjan praises the emotional depth of the film

Speaking to IANS, Shashi said, “After a long time, I watched a film that left me with a triple reaction. Firstly, I became very emotional after watching the film. Secondly, the story and the way it was made completely surprised me. After so many years, I came across a film with such a beautiful narrative and strong emotions. Among all the films released in the last many years, this is one of the best films I have seen.”

“I think banning any kind of film does not serve any purpose, it just causes more harm. When a film is banned, it creates curiosity among people as to why it was banned. I don’t think showing history to today’s youth will lead them in the wrong direction. I strongly disagree with this idea. There have been many films that have highlighted the dark chapters of history. I don’t think today’s educated young audience will be distracted after watching such a film.”

Shashi Ranjan added, “I feel it is unfortunate that the film has been removed from OTT platforms. I hope it comes back soon.”

“Satluj” and removed from OTT

Diljit Dosanjh’s film ‘Satluj’ (previously titled Punjab ’95) has been pulled from streaming platform ZEE5 in India just 48 hours after its release. This sudden removal came in the wake of concerns reported by government authorities over the film’s depiction of alleged police abuses in Punjab during the 1990s. Just hours after it was removed from OTT, the film surfaced online through leaks.
