Warner Bros. is back. to teaming up with Maggie Gyllenhaal, the actress and director behind the studio’s huge disappointment earlier this year. Bride!
The studio optioned Rachel Kushner’s novel Lake of creation For Gyllenhaal to write and develop as a director. Gyllenhaal will also produce.
The novel tells the story of a spy who disrupts the work of an agricultural group in France in order to think again about her life. It is described as dealing with the ideas of activism, paranoia and nihilism in the form of a philosophical thriller.
One of the most acclaimed books of 2024, the novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, longlisted for the National Book Award, and the Ben Faulkner Fiction Award. It was also selected as one of the best books of that year by The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Kirkus Reviews, among other outlets.
Gyllenhaal’s return to the Warner fold is a testament to the faith the studio, particularly the film’s co-president Pam Abdi, has in the emerging director.
wife! It was a huge swing at the studio and a big bet for Gyllenhaal. She has only directed intimate dramas and festival players Missing daughter Before being handed the chair to tackle an ambitious novel set in the 1930s Bride of Frankenstein. Her vision attracted Jesse Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, and Penelope Cruz (husband Peter Sarsgaard and brother Jake Gyllenhaal also participated).
But the film, which was released in March this year after a deep post-production process, flopped, grossing $24 million worldwide on a budget of $90 million.
However, Warner believed in Gyllenhaal as a filmmaker enough to try again.
