Board Chairman Chiranjib Bhattacharya said questions 2B, 11B and 11C – which carry 2, 4 and 4 marks respectively – appear to be outside the prescribed syllabus.

“The Board has consulted relevant subject experts regarding this issue and hereby confirms its validity. Accordingly, it has been concluded that the examinees who will attempt this question(s) will get full marks for the same,” he told PTI.

He said the board has always given top priority to the interests of students and will ensure that no examinee is disadvantaged.

Asked whether students who did not attempt the questions would also get the ten marks, Bhattacharya said: “We will take care of everything.”

The decision comes amid widespread dissatisfaction among candidates and trustees in Kolkata and districts over the questions. Many students were seen collapsing after the exam, while many candidates and parents protested against what they called “extracurricular” problems. No untoward incident was reported.

The fourth semester exams for the twelfth grade began on February 12 and continue until February 27.

An estimated 7.10 lakh candidates are appearing for the exams, including 6.36 lakh students writing fourth semester papers. The rest include candidates taking supplementary exams for the third semester, some of whom are applying under the old curriculum.
