Since graduating, I have loved diving into discussions about an author’s body of work. When my favorite waitress told me she loved Toni Morrison, I found myself browsing the Internet for nonfiction books that explored Morrison’s writing. We swapped must-read titles and talked about our favorites. We were always looking for more to read.

In the past few years, a number of writers and scholars have produced impressive volumes on Morrison’s work. So, if you’re an avid Morrison fan (and who isn’t?!) and are looking for more books about her work, here are some of our favorites.

The Last Interview and Other Conversations series collects interviews and other conversations in print from people who have died. For the Toni Morrison edition, her close friend Nikki Giovanni introduces the volume, giving this book a personal touch. With her vision and perspective on Morrison near the end of her life, this gift-worthy collection is perfect for any Morrison fan.

The newest title on this list is Namwali Serpell On Morrison. Based on her popular lecture series, Namwali Serpell guides readers through each Morrison novel, each chapter focusing on a single book with accompanying themes and ideas. I’m here to provide accessible education, and this book makes high-level ideas accessible to readers around the world. I can’t get this title fast enough!

Tony Cover Chart Randomly: The Legendary Editing of an Iconic Writer by Dana A. Williams

Random Tony: The Legendary Editing of a Celebrated Writer by Dana A. Williams

Before Toni Morrison became a legendary writer, she was an editor. Dating Dana A. Williams wrote Morrison’s editorial work at Random House, where she helped shape the works of authors such as Toni Cade Bambara, Leon Forrest, and Lucille Clifton. There is something special about seeing the way Morrison has invested her life and career in the work of others, ensuring that these writers get the opportunity to see their books in the world.
