The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the license of a canteen operating at KEM Hospital in Mumbai and ordered it to stop operating after an inspection found unhygienic conditions and violations of food safety norms, officials said on Saturday.

The action was taken against Stany Caterers, which operates from the ground floor of the Old Nurses Home building at KEM Hospital in Parel, following an inspection conducted by the FDA’s Zone 3 team on July 15.

King Edward Memorial Hospital is a public medical college and hospital established in 1926. The medical college is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

The canteen operations were halted after food safety officials discovered unhygienic conditions and violations of provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) and related regulations, officials said.

The Food Safety Officer issued a stop-work notice, while the food business license was suspended with immediate effect by the designated officer.

During the inspection, officials collected four official food samples for laboratory analysis. The samples included prepared rice, mixed pulse bhaji, kabuli chana used as raw materials, and refined sunflower oil.

The crackdown against food companies has intensified since IAS officer Tukaram Munde took over as Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner in May. Searches were conducted at several hotels, restaurants and dhabas.

The US Food and Drug Administration has suspended the food business license of a Mumbai-based Parsi dairy farm after serious food safety and hygiene violations were found, officials said on Thursday.
