The Space Ministry has tightened norms for voluntary retirement and resignation amid a spate of resignations at ISRO.

The Space Ministry has reportedly issued a memorandum to the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), tightening rules governing resignation and voluntary retirement of scientists and engineers working on critical missions including ‘Gaganyaan’.

The memorandum directed these centers not to routinely accept resignations or requests for voluntary retirement from Group A scientific and technical personnel, news agency PTI reported. This comes amid reports of more than 100 ISRO employees resigning from the space agency across various centers in the country.
The recent wave of resignations has shed light on job roles at the space agency, including their salaries and eligibility criteria.

Scientist/Engineer-SC
Eligibility
- Any candidate with BE (Bachelor of Engineering), BTech (Bachelor of Technology) or equivalent with a minimum aggregate score of 65% marks or CGPA of 6.84/10 can qualify for the role with a valid GATE score. These candidates are selected for interview on the basis of their scores in GATE itself. The maximum age for this is 28.
- Any candidate with BE (Bachelor of Engineering) or BTech (Bachelor of Technology) with a minimum aggregate score of 65% or CGPA of 6.84/10 and above, and a Master of Science degree, can qualify through a written test and interview. The maximum age for this is 28 years.
- Any candidate with an Engineering degree with a minimum aggregate score of 65% or CGPA of 6.84/10 and above + MBA with first class can also qualify by taking a written test and interview. The maximum age for this is 30.
- Any candidate with an ME (Master of Engineering) or M Tech (Master of Technology) degree or equivalent with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA of 6.5/10 and above can qualify. These candidates must have a prior eligibility qualification of BE/B Tech/MSc degree or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 65% or GPA of 6.84/10 and above. They can qualify through a written test and an interview. The maximum age for this is 30.
tidy – The salary for the role of Scientist/Engineer-SC in the pay matrix ranges between $56,100 and $1,77500 (level 10-17). He can advance to the level of “Distinguished Scientist” at level 16 ( $(2,05,400-2,24,400) through merit promotion system, subject to satisfactory performance.
Scientist/Engineer – SD
Eligibility
- Candidates with PhD qualification are considered for the position of Scientist/Engineer-SD at Level 11 as per requirement. A live register is maintained on the ISRO website for registration of PhD candidates. Candidates are selected through interview. The maximum qualifying age is 35 years. Prerequisites for eligibility include:
- 1. ME/M Tech/MS/MSc or equivalent with minimum 60% marks or CGPA 6.5/10 and above
- 2. BE/B Tech or equivalent with a minimum of 65% marks or CGPA of 6.84/10 and above
3. Bachelor of Science or equivalent with a minimum of 60% or GPA of 6.5/10 and above
tidy – The salary for the role in the pay matrix ranges between $67,700 F $2,08,700 (Level 11). He can advance to a distinguished realm at level 16 with a salary of between $2,05,400-2,24,400 through merit promotion scheme, subject to satisfactory performance.
Technician – b
Eligibility
- Candidates must possess SSLC + ITI/NTC/NAC degree from NCVT (minimum 2 years course. Selection is done through written test and skill test, where selection is mainly based on written test marks. Skill test is of qualifying nature only. Maximum age for this is 35 years.
salary The salary for the role in the pay matrix ranges between $21,700 EGP $69,100 (Level 3). Can progress up to the position of Assistant Engineer at level 12 with a pay range of $78800 and $2,09,200 through merit enhancement scheme, subject to satisfactory performance.
Technical assistant
Eligibility
- Candidates must have a diploma in engineering with a first rank from a council recognized in the country in the required specialty depending on the nature of the job at the center.
- Selection is done through a written test and a skills test (based on the curriculum). Selection is based primarily on a written test, with the skills test being only of a qualifying nature. The maximum age for this is 35.
tidy – The salary for the role in the pay matrix ranges between $44900 F $1,42,400 (Level 7). He can advance up to the position of Technical Officer-SG at Level 13-A, between $1,31.100 and $2,16,600 through Merit Enhancement Scheme, subject to satisfactory performance.
Scientific assistant
Eligibility
- Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with first class status from a recognized university/institution in the desired specialty depending on the nature of the position in the center.
- Selection is done through a written test and a skills test (based on the curriculum). Selection is based primarily on a written test, with the skills test being only of a qualifying nature. The maximum age for this is 35.
