A 30-year-old man was beaten to death by five men in Hyderabad’s upscale Madhapur area on Tuesday evening, on suspicion of a hate crime, police said on Wednesday.

An officer from Madhapur police station said that the victim, identified as Chinnappalli Bhaskar, is from Apparapalli village in Wardanapet mandal of Warangal district.
According to preliminary investigations, Bhaskar, who was working as a chef in a hotel in the Ayyappa Society, was in a relationship with a woman from the same village.
“But her family opposed the relationship as they belonged to different castes and they married her off to another man about three years ago. However, Bhaskar continued to pursue her…and this led to disagreements between her and her husband, which led to divorce,” the officer said.
The woman’s father allegedly suspected Bhaskar was responsible for the breakdown of her marriage and threatened revenge.
On Wednesday around 11 pm, five men arrived at the hostel in Ayyappa society, where Bhaskar was staying, and allegedly called him outside on the pretext of talking to him. Police said they then attacked him with knives and sticks. The officer said Bhaskar sustained multiple injuries and died on the spot.

“Based on a complaint lodged by Madhu, Bhaskar’s elder brother, we have registered a case of murder and are investigating it. Forensic teams have examined the crime scene,” the officer said.
Bhaskar’s body was sent to Osmania General Hospital for post mortem examination. His relatives protested outside Madhapur police station, demanding justice and immediate arrest of those responsible.
Police said they are questioning the woman, and the investigation is ongoing.
