Freddy Krueger has a new home and he’s ready to create a new nightmare.
Paramount Pictures has closed a deal to acquire the original screenplay rights to the film in the United States A Nightmare on Elm Streetthe film written and directed by Wes Craven that started the popular horror franchise, featuring a killer with a gloved metal hand and a burnt face, will be adapted into a new film.
New A Nightmare on Elm Street It will hail from Paramount’s new label, Paramount Primal, led by JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producers behind films like barbaric and Friendship.
US rights are licensed from Craven’s estate, which includes Craven’s widow Ia LaPonca and Craven’s son Jonathan Craven. The duo will produce the remake with Mark Toberoff, a lawyer-turned-producer who specializes in copyright law. Lifshitz and Margules will executive produce for Paramount Primal.
“We look forward to introducing the world of Wes Craven A Nightmare on Elm Street “To a new, completely engaged generation of fans,” LaBonca said in a statement. “We know Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror takes its long-overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for us all to sit together in a dark theater – around a campfire today – as the next chapter of this nightmare story unfolds.”
Lifshitz and Margules stated, “We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven. The fact that Ia and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help bring a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to fans everywhere, and welcoming Freddy home.”

Copyright law allows authors to reclaim their rights 35 years after publication, which screenwriters and their estates have used to reclaim their works. The Craven family regained the rights to the screenplay in 2019 with the help of Toberoff, who also regained the rights to another horror franchise, the original screenplay for a horror film. Paramount Primal is the new name for the previously untitled franchise launched by Lifshitz and Margules, who previously had a production deal at New Line. The duo is known for producing in the low-budget world and the goal of the new label is to partner with up-and-coming storytellers as well as established filmmakers to produce smart-budget films across a variety of genres, including horror, comedy, action and sci-fi based.
The Craven estate is repped by WME, Industry Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
