The governor, who is also the rector of the state’s universities, stressed how not to be deprived of family responsibilities for the sake of professional ambitions.

‘Expert mothers’ in front of IAS officers

During her speech, Patel stressed that women should not give up on their professional ambitions, but should instead strive to continue their education and career even after marriage.

“Whether you become an IAS officer or a teacher, you have to first become an expert mother. Everyone should know how to cook home-cooked food,” she said. Patel urged the young women to use their knowledge and skills to build the nation.

She stressed that parents’ responsibility in raising their daughters does not stop at securing their admission to schools or colleges. She added: “Parents should know what their children do after they enter educational institutions. Even a simple error in supervision can negatively affect their future.”

Patel then moved on to talk about the prevailing issue of drug abuse around college hostels, and revealed how the monitoring team formed by Jan Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan) had found cases of drug supply through food containers.

The governor then emphasized how education goes beyond what is written on paper into the moral space, in addition to the increasing cases of domestic violence and crime against women. “If testimonies are increasing but society is still witnessing such crimes, it reflects the real state of our education. Moral values are no less important than academic knowledge,” Patel said.

Love marriage and women’s health

Comments surrounding women’s lives were not strange, as Patel had earlier stressed the need for more awareness about women’s health, nutrition, anemia, menstruation, menopause, pregnancy and maternal health at a mother-daughter conference at Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University in Lucknow after it was held.

It pushed universities to conduct regular health check-ups for female students, set up body mass index testing facilities, and offer ‘garb sanskar’ courses to teach students about maternal nutrition and fetal development in order to ensure healthy pregnancies.

She also previously stressed that nation building is the ultimate goal of education. “It is not enough for a student to obtain degrees, but they must develop into personalities full of knowledge, dedication and responsibility to society while ensuring contribution to nation building which is the actual aim of the education system of any nation,” she said in her address at the third convocation of Raja Mahindra Pratap Singh University in Aligarh, as reported by HT earlier.

At the 24th convocation of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University in Lucknow the previous day, Patel called on women to be self-reliant before marrying someone else. She stressed: “If you love someone, rely on yourself first, then get married.”
