Shooting in South Africa: More than 12 people killed and 9 others injured in Johannesburg after gunmen opened fire

At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured after gunmen opened fire on an informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, South Africa.The South African Police Service said officers responded to reports of continuing shooting late on Tuesday evening at around 11.10pm in the Gambers informal settlement, where they found several victims at various locations within the area.Eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim later died in hospital. Reuters reported that the injured were transferred to receive medical treatment. Police said more than 10 suspects were dropped off near the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum. The attackers reportedly entered through two access points and moved through the community, opening fire on residents before fleeing in the same vehicle.“More than 10 suspects were allegedly dropped off in a white Toyota Quantum near a gas station in Cleveland,” police said in a statement.The motive behind the attack is still unknown, and no one has been arrested yet. The authorities launched a manhunt and requested information from the public.South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, with one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
