As leaders of 23 opposition parties gather in New Delhi on June 8 for a major All India bloc meeting, one notable absentee is the Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

The absence raised eyebrows as the Congress, a major component of the India bloc, is now a partner in the TVK-led government in Tamil Nadu. However, experts say there are several reasons why TVK was not invited to the meeting, the most important of which is that the party has no representation in parliament.

The meeting is primarily intended for parties with MPs

The most obvious explanation for TVK’s absence is that it currently has no representatives in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha.

The June 8 meeting will focus on coordination between opposition parties at the national level, and discussions are expected to focus on Parliament’s strategy, the policies of the BJP-led NDA government, and the future course of the opposition. Most of the parties attending the meeting have representation in Parliament and are directly involved in opposition politics at the national level.

While TVK formed the government in Tamil Nadu after the 2026 Assembly elections, it did not contest the Lok Sabha elections and therefore has no parliamentary presence. As a result, it is not part of the core group of opposition parties participating in the parliamentary coordination of the India Code.

TVK is not an official member of the India bloc yet

Apart from the issue of parliamentary representation, TVK is also not a member of the India Alliance yet.

Although the Congress cooperated with TVK after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and supported the Vijay government, this arrangement is limited to Tamil Nadu politics. TVK never formally joined the India Bloc, formed by opposition parties to challenge the BJP at the national level.

The June 8 meeting is officially considered a meeting of the India Caucus, and invitations have been extended to the parties comprising the alliance. Since TVK is still outside the official structure of the coalition, it was not included in the list of invitees.

In other words, Congress may be an ally of TVK in Tamil Nadu, but that does not automatically make TVK a member of the India bloc.

Vijay’s victory hit the DMK and Congress unit

TVK’s exclusion also comes against the backdrop of dramatic political fallout in Tamil Nadu. After the Assembly elections, the Congress broke from its long-standing alliance with the DMK and supported Vijay’s bid to form the government. The move sparked sharp criticism from the DMK, which accused the Congress of treason.

The fallout was severe enough for the DMK to announce that it was no longer part of the India bloc and would not meet on June 8.

Against this background, TVK’s invitation to the meeting could have further highlighted the tensions that emerged within the opposition camp. The India bloc is already facing internal disagreements, and the division between the Congress and the KDP has become one of the biggest challenges facing the alliance in recent months.

What does this mean for TVK?

TVK’s absence from the meeting does not necessarily indicate hostility between the party and the All India Bloc. Rather, it reflects the fact that Vijay’s party occupies a unique political position.

It heads a state government with support from Congress, but has no members of Parliament, and is not officially part of the India alliance. Vijay also sought to project TVK as an independent political force rather than fully aligning it with any national coalition.
