Hours after being sworn in as Karnataka Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar launched a slew of welfare measures, with a focus on recruitment of youth and students.

Among the announcements made after his first cabinet meeting in the state was the decision to issue free bus tickets to students. Shivakumar took oath earlier today at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, along with 13 other ministers who were appointed to the cabinet.

Free bus tickets, job boost: welfare measures for Shivakumar on day one as CM

• Shivakumar said travel of students in government buses will now be free. “We will issue free bus tickets to all students,” he said. This will apply to non-luxury government buses.

•, In a bid to address the issue of unemployment, the Karnataka CM said his government will set up a special employment exchange where people can register for jobs, news agency PTI reported. “The private sector employment exchange routes will be finalized within a month,” Shivakumar said.

• Shivakumar also said that for employment of youth in government jobs, the schedule of events will be announced soon and other promised decisions to address and prevent farmer migration, reported PTI.

• Shivakumar also said that the state government would expand the A-Khata document issuance drive to include unlicensed premises across Karnataka and announced the setting up of 10,000 Bharat Jodo Yuva Sangha to raise the quality of leadership and build social harmony. $10 lakh will be given to Bharat Guddu Yuva Sangha in each village panchayat, he added.

Apart from the welfare announcements, the Prime Minister also appealed to the media to cooperate with the government. “The four pillars of democracy must work side by side,” he said.
